Welcome to the San Luis history and area information guide. San Luis is the oldest town in Colorado formerly known as San Luis de la Culebra. San Luis was settled primarily by Hispanic families who settled there in 1851 from Taos, New Mexico area.
San Luis is well known for its Sations of the Cross bronze statues situtated at the top of the mesa adjacent to the town. Each station represents a moment during the crucification of Christ. The bronze statues were created by local San Luis artist Huberto Meastas with a smaller version presented to the Pope.
